Today was pretty much an all bus day -- up early to drive to Bucharest, where most of the tour group stayed to take planes home tomorrow. However, 37 of us signed up to see Transylvania, so after lunch, our old group took off and we hopped on a different bus to drive north to the Carpathian Mountains and Sinaia, where we will spend the next 3 days.

The drive to Bucharest paralleled the canal we had been in for a while, and was very much like the scenery of Wisconsin -- lots of nice flat farm land. Bucharest is a mess of ugly communist era apartments and wonderful old stuff in disrepair. We'll get a formal tour when we get back on Thursday afternoon. The road to Sinaia was a lot of of the same, but we started being able to see the snow-capped Carpathians and got windy roads for the last 45 minutes or so.

This area has been popular for skiing -- lots cheaper than going to the Swiss, Austrian, or French Alps -- and Sinaia looks a lot like a ski town -- lots of places to eat and buy clothes, a couple dinky grocery stores -- mostly populated by us, looking for good cheap wine, which is not an oxymoron. Got a $6 Pinot Noir from the area that was actually very drinkable. The only bad thing is I didn't think to bring a corkscrew, and no one here sells one. I had the bar at our hotel open it for me. We have been being fed constantly for the last 10 days, so we skipped having a big supper, and snacked on almonds and pinot. Free internet here, so we are also catching up on downloads too.
