The crew set sail back to Halong and our bus at 7am, just before breakfast. It was about a 2-hour ride and gave us time to finish packing up and to enjoy the view.
Halong -- lots of construction going on. Halong Bay is the most popular destination in Vietnam. |
Fishing Boat |
A long line of day boats heading out. They used to be all sorts of colors, but after this became a Heritage site, the government decided that was too chaotic and decreed that white was the way to go. |
Our guide called this Vietnam's Golden Gate bridge. It was built by the Japanese and is more of a combination of the Golden Gate and the Bay Bridges. |
Back on land, we quickly boarded our bus for the trip back to Hanoi. This time, Jim and I took the front seats which provided a SUBSTANTIALLY less bumpy ride than the back seat had. Or maybe the driver slowed down more over the bumps. In any case, I don't think I got any unearned steps today.
We made one stop along the road at a vegetable garden. One woman was working in it. It had a lot of different kinds of veggies growing and Jim kept asking what was what, so David led him down into the field to investigate.
Not the kind of job I would want! |
Discussing veggies |
Cemetery plot in the middle of the field. This is not allowed anymore, but not all existing ones are forced to move. |
Our first stop in Hanoi was lunch, then a quick trip to a pharmacy and to a coffee shop that specializes in 'weasel' coffee. Apparently, the weasels eat the coffee beans, they ferment in the weasel guts and are 'harvested' when they are excreted. It is supposed to make coffee very tasty, but I'll pass.
We got exactly the same room in the hotel, and several people (including me) signed up for massage, which ran about $24 for over an hour. Now all we have to do is repack everything for our flight to Jakarta tomorrow noon. I probably won't post anything for that travel day.
