4/18: Transfer to Taormina, Sicily

This was a LONG travel day, mainly because the non-stop options from Malta to Catania  (the airport nearest Taormina) were so bad -- fly out at 6AM or 10PM. As it was, we took a connecting flight to Rome on two different airlines that didn't work together, so we had to collect our luggage in Rome and recheck it and get our boarding passes at the other airline's check-in. ITA (the other airline) sent us to 3 different places to check in and we ended up back at the first place.

We also had to leave the Malta hotel at 4:20am to catch a 7am flight and had a 3+ hour layover in Rome. On our first (Air Malta) flight, none of the snacks or beverages were free -- a measly bottle of water was almost $3. The good news is that everyone/thing arrived as planned and we had a 45 minute drive to Taormina. Our hotel is right at the edge of the old town, which Jim and I visited for a day back in 2017.

The hotel looks like a palace from the outside. My room is compact, but it has a desk and best of all, looks out high above any other buildings so I don't need to worry about pulling the drapes closed.

We met our new guide, Annunziata, and two more people joined the tour, making 10 of us. After a bit of time to explore and get a snack, we had a short meeting, and settled down for the night.
