August 10/11 -- Fly to Ireland

Starting a trip is always the worst, especially when it requires an overnight flight. Both flights had mechanical holds for an hour each. Fortunately, we had a 2.5 hour layover on the first flight, so no problem there. The second flight was due to leave at 10pm and the hour late start delayed beverage service (with overhead lights on and an option for a meal!) until midnight, which left little time for sleep.

We are now at the Old Weir Lodge  in Killarney, which became at tourist attraction when Queen Victoria visited in the 1800s. The population doubles in the summer! Killarney is also over an hour and a half from the airport -- we had a private taxi and Jim held up the conversation with the driver who is also a tour guide. In the meantime, I tried to drift off, but the seat didn't recline, so my attempt was not that successful. Despite a heat wave and drought earlier this spring and summer, the surroundings are all green, with rolling hills and derelict castles everywhere.

Once settled at the hotel, we walked to the main town, about 3/4 of a mile away, to get a sim card, check out the aran sweater options, and get a little serious exercise in the daylight to reset our internal clocks 8 hours ahead.

In an hour, we will meet the other 7 travelers on this portion of the trip and go to dinner so that we can crash and wake up tomorrow to start our SERIOUS explorations.
