10/5 -- The Return Home Starts

There are definitely some advantages to time zone readjustment. We both woke up before 6 and were on the road headed west shortly after 9am, an hour sooner than anticipated. We didn't want to push too hard today, and actually did something totally unplanned based on signage along the road: we visited Hershey, PA and went to the Chocolate Story Museum!

The town is all about chocolate -- huge amusement park, street lights with caps that are huge Hershey kisses, and a couple of museums to choose from. We spent about an hour at the museum. It starts with a look at the life of a worker in the early years -- starting jobs paid from 9 cents to 15 cents an hour, and work days were 10 hours. Hershey was pretty forward thinking for his time -- he encouraged employee input and his worker town facilitated people buying the homes he had built vs. charging exorbitant rents. He included park space and cultural opportunities in the town as well. He also built an orphanage and school and endowed it with $60 million in 1918. The school is still there, and currently serves 1800 kids. Quite a contrast to today's conspicuous consumption!

Then it was back on the road. We stopped before 4:30 at Roanoke, VA, about 50-75 miles further than we thought we would get. The early start allowed us to goof off for an hour and still have a good travel day. It looks like we could get to Taos a day early, so we are considering our alternatives. Roanoke apparently shuts down on Sunday, as the hotel told us only 2 places were open for dinner. The closest was a Mexican restaurant, and of course, there has been no opportunity for a margarita for 3 weeks. We should have waited. This is too far east for good Mexican food, apparently.
