7/14 -- Transfer to Hwange National Park

We flew to Livingstone, took a bus to the Zambian side of Victorian Falls, then transferred to a bus on the Zimbabwean side. We stopped at a market to shop but the pressure to buy is almost as bad as China was 11 years ago due to the desperate economic conditions, so after walking past a row of shops to see what the options were, I refused to go back and try to find something. Instead we waited for the others and found this interesting 'medical' posting.

We stopped briefly in our Victorian Falls hotel for a rest stop and to allow Sammie to coordinate with her local office and got our 1st chance in 10 days to connect to the internet. Our email  download was daunting, and we only got a couple of emails and facebook posts off before it was time to leave.

On the way to Hwange, we stopped at St. Mary's Catholic School, supported in part by the Grand Circle Foundation, and met some of the kids.
We visited this group of 7th graders

By 4:30 we arrived at the park and got a chance to unpack before a short 'orientation' drive, which turned out to be wine and snacks at a fabulous overlook. Our camp is at the top of a ridge overlooking  a watering hole and large valley.  A night drive was offered at sunset and I declined, based on my other unhappy and COLD night drives, but Jim prevailed upon me to give it a shot. Lucky thing: it was really an excuse to have wine at an overlook at sunset! Tomorrow, we start game viewing in earnest, but today we already saw klipspringers, zebra, elephants, and several dwarf mongoose.

The only klipspringers we saw. One was standing on the rock
to the right of the one you can see. They bolted so fast, this
was the only shot  I got off. They are like mountain goats.

Our cabin at Kashawe Camp in Hwange. It was especially nice
with a rug that covered the whole main room floor.
View from our ridge-top tent
This is my kind of night game drive.
